UK IUA November 2006

Reaching out to our customers, partners and community

It is the aniversary of our divestiture from CA (cheer!) and whilst the corporate machine keeps the industry and press informed I know that a few of you like the odd face-to-face meetings at conferences and events.

I attended the recent UK Ingres User Association conference in London, one of the better attended one day conferences that I’ve been to. Probably due to a combination of the lengthy interval between events, the generosity of a free registration and the omniscient presence of Senior Ingres Executives.

It was heartening to see many new faces amongst the familiar ones and to learn that delegates from beyond Europe had travelled especially to attend. The main message was one promoting both agility and flexibility between Ingres and its partners, not just technologically but commercially too. Something emphasised in all of the keynote presentaions by Roger Burkardt President and COO, Dave Dargo CTO and Emma McGrattan SVP of Engineering. Highlights included Project IceBreaker, a developing partnership with Golden Gate and the Technical Status and Plans with a pre-announcement of the intention to release OpenROAD as open source.

Among the many questions from the delegates the key ones were of the availability of customer and partner references, an indication of the growth trend with new users and when Ingres will make a media splash this side of the Atlantic. All of these questions relate to our sales, services and partner base being able to convince their customers to deploy with Ingres. Whilst vitally important moving forward you have to remember that certain parts of Ingres are only 12 months old and these past 12 months have been concentrated on continued support of existing customers and simplifying the way you engage with Ingres the company and the technology.

All in all a successful and enjoyable conference and less than half the commute for me, brilliant.

The next event will probably be May/June 2007 make a space in your diary and send your suggestions to www.iua.org.uk.
